  The Foundations of Excellence

The iCAPTURE Centre builds on the strong knowledge base that currently exists in the McDonald Research Laboratories (MRL) and that has evolved since 1977. It includes the use of humans and animals to study disease, preparation and evaluation of cells and tissues, expression and localization of proteins and genes, tissue culture of organs and cells, digital image capture and measurement, computer networking, and database management. The techniques are supported by an infrastructure that has worked well in the McDonald Research Laboratories for over 20 years. The two main Foundational components that will be upgraded with the CFI funding will be the Histology Laboratory and the Computing Support.

The Histology Laboratory provides the foundation from which most of the other Cores will obtain their tissue samples for further analysis (i.e. laser capture microdissection), or to which Cores will send their tissues after physiological testing for processing. In order to accurately perform some of the imaging techniques, tissues must be processed in a standardized, controlled manner. Establishing this laboratory will allow the standardization crucial to procedures in other iCAPTURE Cores. The Histology Laboratory will include evaluation of proteins in tissues on slides (immunohistochemistry) and genes in tissues on slides (in situ hybridization).

In order to support the iCAPTURE Centre with the number of users (over 200), image generation (10 gigabytes per day), and data storage and analysis, a powerful computer network is absolutely critical. The upgraded computing network becomes the true foundation on which the iCAPTURE Centre is built. The newly available networking technology allows faster communications and data transfer within our site, between hospital sites and UBC, and to the internet. Messaging and collaboration will be possible from anywhere in the world and secured with encryption and firewall protection. The network will support all of the data created in the MRL/iCAPTURE and will be essential in the integration and management.
